  • Psychotic disorders (such schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder)

The Importance of Seeing a Physician

We believe that the most thorough evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment planning for psychiatric disorders are performed by specialists with medical training.  Only a licensed M.D. or licensed D.O. is a physician with a doctorate degree in the field of medicine who has passed testing and training requirements to practice medicine.  It is important to consult with a medical doctor so that drug interactions and other health conditions can be considered because symptoms are not always caused by a mental health condition.  Someone who is not medically trained may not be able to distinguish between mental health conditions and medical conditions that have psychiatric symptoms.  Someone who is not medically trained may not fully understand how psychiatric condtions, especially psychiatric conditions that remain undiagnosed and untreated, may adversely affect one's medical health and wellbeing.

The Importance of Seeing a Specialist Physician

Typically, only physicians in the fields of Psychiatry, Neurology, or Developmental Behavioral Medicine have had residency training and a career that focuses on the treatment of patients with psychiatric conditions.  When performing a mental health evaluation, when recommending treatment, and when monitoring treatment outcomes, it is important to have an advanced knowledge of the therapies and the psychiatric medications that are available today - along with their risks, benefits, and side effects.
